001. Both mun and muse are over 21, and as such I don't feel comfortable interacting with users under the age of 18. I am happy to write scenes involving characters who are minors, as long as their mun is an adult. Of course, scenes involving minors are only on the table as long as no adult themes are involved. This is excluding themes of war/combat, both due to Shinra's penchant for recruiting teenagers, and Angeal's role in training SOLDIERs. 002. Final Fantasy VII covers a number of triggering topics, including: eco-terrorism, corporate fascism, human experimentation, war, grief/loss, dissociation, post traumatic stress disorder and hallucination. Not all of these are relevant to Angeal, but may still come up and will be tagged appropriately. 003. This account will contain discussions of: mental illness, suicide, parental loss, internalised homophobia, human experimentation and war. I would like to put a heavy emphasis on discussions of suicide. This will always be tagged appropriately (tw: suicide), but it will most definitely come up, as I find Angeal's suicide one of the most interesting and compelling things about him, and I like to explore his character as a mental health narrative.

004. My blog is OC and multiverse friendly! Where would we be without original characters? I love to put people in situations, please slot Angeal into your world! This is also a multiship blog! Every story exists in it's own universe - why limit our options? 005. If you're interested in rping something romantic, please discuss it with me beforehand! I would likely only be comfortable with this after getting to know the mun :) 006. Currently I only really ship Angeal with Genesis, but I'm open to anything (as long as everyone's of age). I will not ship Angeal with Zack, as ages aside, the power imbalance is icky to me and Angeal wouldn't feel good about that either.

007. I do not roleplay smut, and I doubt this will change anytime soon! I'm generally very happy to discuss adult topics and have suggestive themes, but would be more comfortable with a timeskip or fade to black. 008. I block bigots and proshippers and general freaks. Dark themes are ok with me, but there's a line and if you cross it I will block. 009. PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION / FIRST IMPRESSION At 6'3" and 210lbs, Angeal cuts an imposing figure - one that instantly commands respect from his subordinates (and even some superiors). He has dark, rugged features, an aquiline nose and thick, furrowed eyebrows. A somewhat stern resting face and perpetual bags under his eyes mean he is often mistaken for a much older man, an assumption only encouraged by his serious personality. His face is framed by very thick, coarse black hair - as a young recruit, this was cropped short, save for his curtain bangs, but as an adult it falls just below neck length. Angeal is a very hairy man in general - he sports an impressive pair of sideburns, a goatee, and the same black hair can be found over most of his body. Unlike Genesis, who seems to only be able to create humans, Angeal can also create monsters - and also fuse himself with the copies he creates, in order to become Angeal Penance.

[ #G-0002 ] PROPERTY OF SHINRA ELECTRIC POWER COMPANY. Project Gillian, or Project G for short, was an experiment funded by the Shinra Electric Power Company, spearheaded by Doctor Hollander. During this experiment, Hollander injected fellow researcher Gillian Hewley (Subject #G-0001) with Jenova cells, in the hopes that she could then pass them on to others.Subject #G-0002 - better known as Angeal Hewley - was never meant to exist. His creation was entirely down to an ill-advised tryst between the two researchers early in the experiment. Nevertheless, the existence of another sample was welcomed. Upon his birth, Gillian began to fear what the researchers would do to her son - precisely why she was never intended to carry any of the subjects - and attempted to flee with a newborn Angeal, but was apprehended and returned to the labs. After the arrival of Subject #G-0003, whose cells were far less stable than Angeal's, the Shinra Electric Power Company deemed the entire project a failure. In order to keep them under surveillance, each of the subjects were sent to Banora Village, a small island in Mideel with Shinra ties.In Banora, Gillian Hewley would meet and marry a man named John, whom Angeal came to know as his father. Less than a year old at the time, Gillian and her new husband decided to raise Angeal as a normal child, and to never reveal the circumstances of his birth to him; both to save him the burden of knowing, and so Gillian would never have to relive her trauma.This worked well for the family. Angeal idolised his father, who instilled a strong work ethic and a strict moral code in the boy - something Angeal would hold onto for life, and later pass down to Zack Fair (and by extension, Cloud Strife). Despite their happiness, he and his family were poor. Gillian had received a payout from the company upon her departure, but it didn't last, and his father earned very little. Much of Angeal's childhood was spent hard at work; assisting his father in the orchards, running odd jobs for his neighbours, and helping his mother around the house. Anything to help out.Despite his responsibilities, he still found the time to be a child. When Angeal was still very young - around five or six years old (the story gets blurry over the years) - he met Genesis Rhapsodos, the only son of a rich landlord. Banora's size meant its children would often grow up without playmates their own age. What a stroke of luck to meet a boy just a few months younger than him!
(Gillian choked on her tea when Angeal came home to tell her the story. She knew of the Rhapsodos boy, of course. She'd just rather hoped to never have to look Subject #G-0003 in the eyes.)Despite the class divide - and their polar opposite personalities - the two became fast friends, growing up practically attached at the hip. Genesis-and-Angeal were the terror of Banora - at least when Angeal let his best friend have his way.When the children were just entering their teenage years, a new age for Shinra began, as they unveiled to the world their shining war hero: Sephiroth. The product of an experiment just after Project G, Sephiroth was a few years younger than the pair, and already a decorated hero. Angeal was impressed—though a little concerned for the child—but Genesis was enraptured, desperate for Sephiroth's fame and glory.Within a few months, he had made up his mind to enlist in SOLDIER - Shinra's elite military force, in the hopes of achieving a similar rank. Refusing to give up Angeal, Genesis then set his mind to convincing him to enlist too. This took very little persuading - Angeal had already been considering signing up, though for far less impressive reasons than his best friend. The older he became, the more aware he was of the way his parents struggled. Work was scarce in a place as small as Banora, though he worked hard where he could to improve both his own circumstances and those of the community. SOLDIER meant a steady paycheck, with food and accommodation provided. Angeal could send every last gil home to his parents.

The next summer, Angeal bid goodbye to his parents and his home. Before he departed for Midgar, his father presented him with a gift: the Buster Sword, a behemoth of a sword he'd had forged specially as a symbol of his family's honour, and something to set him apart from his fellow SOLDIERs. The boy was incredibly grateful, if taken aback by the extravagance of the gift, and vowed never to use the sword for fear of damaging it.In Midgar, Angeal easily made SOLDIER, already strong and fit from years of manual labour. His strong work ethic and commitment to his ideals served him well, and he quickly began climbing the ranks - going from third class to second in just under a year. Wholly dedicated to his work and fiercely protective of his comrades, Angeal became well-respected by his superiors, and even entrusted with work arguably above his rank.(Roughly one year into his service, Angeal received word from Banora: his father had passed away. The Buster Sword had been expensive to commission, and he'd borrowed a large sum of money to do so - with interest. The workload necessary to pay off the loan and keep the family afloat, even with Angeal's earnings sent back home, proved too much for John. His heart gave out from exhaustion. Angeal would continue to blame himself for the rest of his days.)From the nature of his birth, Angeal had been on Shinra's radar from the moment he enlisted, but he gained some extra attention when the company became aware of his VR training scores - numbers which obviously fluctuated depending on the day, but the second was a constant near the top of the leaderboard, with an average score surpassed by only Sephiroth.At sixteen years old, after the events in Rhadore, Angeal was chosen as squad leader on a mission in Wutai with the legendary Sephiroth - likely since the company didn't feel as though they could trust their "hero". The second was honoured and excited to meet the company's only First Class SOLDIER, though Sephiroth didn't appear to share the sentiment. The two initially clashed due to their vastly different worldviews (Angeal valuing camaraderie and trust above all, with Sephiroth preferring to work alone and placing little trust in anyone), at one point even fighting one another - but the mission was a success, and the two eventually became close friends.Up until this point, Shinra had been impressed with Angeal's record, but reluctant to promote him. Being the only First Class automatically placed Sephiroth on a pedestal, without having to explain exactly what made Sephiroth special. First Class, as it was, made for an excellent motivator in the lower ranks: an unattainable goal to strive towards.
The fact that his and Sephiroth's mission was entirely caught on camera—that Bachman had captured hours of footage showing Sephiroth's refusal to cooperate, and Angeal stepping in every time and saying all the right things—had a created a headache Shinra could no longer ignore. Sure, they would never release the footage - but it was there. They had seen it. Eventually they would have to face the facts: Sephiroth was undoubtedly the face of SOLDIER, but Angeal made a much better voice.And so, at the age of seventeen, he made first class. This promotion came with a lot of responsibility: public appearances, interviews, leadership roles - all of which Angeal took to like a duck to water. It was as if he was born to play this role; he always seemed to know just what to say to inspire confidence in him and the company, both with the public and his subordinates. Sephiroth was superhuman, untouchable - but Angeal Hewley was humble and down to earth, and the public loved it. Shinra looked good on him.Not too long after, in a fit of jealous tenacity, Genesis clawed his way up the ranks to join them, and the notorious duo became a trio.Some years later, Angeal found himself in charge of a rather rambunctious, yet incredibly promising,—

second class SOLDIER, named Zack Fair. He quickly grew fond of the boy, though just as quickly tired of his restless and impulsive nature - privately nicknaming him "the puppy" due to his energetic and untrained nature. Still, though he was hard on the boy, he secretly doted on him, seeing him as a little brother of sorts.Around the same time, an incident occured between Genesis and Sephiroth in the VR training room—where the Firsts liked to spar for fun—which ended in Angeal having to get inbetween the two, not unlike separating two fighting dogs. In the chaos, Angeal's company-issued sword snapped in two, lodging itself in Genesis' shoulder. Though Firsts notoriously heal quickly, the wound never closed, and instead began to rot, taking Genesis' mind with it. This is a phenomenon known as degradation, known to occur with the presence of Mako and/or Jenova cells.Having learned the truth behind their existence, driven mad by the effects of degradation, and encouraged (read: manipulated) by Doctor Hollander, Genesis defected, alongside around two-thirds of SOLDIER's manpower.In the time following, despite knowing that he would have to eliminate Genesis if he couldn't get him to comply, Angeal insisted on being the one to find and bring his best friend home. Even though he'd only been trying to stop his friends from destroying each other and their environment, he felt personally responsible for Genesis' plight.After around a month, he was given his opportunity. Sent with Zack to Wutai to finish the mission Genesis abandoned, the pair came across Genesis Copies - clones Genesis was able to creating using abilities granted by Project G. Keeping Zack and Sephiroth busy with summons and copies, Genesis managed to reach Angeal, and took him back to Banora to reveal the secrets behind their creation.Disturbed and betrayed by this new information, Angeal grew distraught. Unsure for one of the first times in his life, he abandoned both Genesis and Shinra, leaving the Buster Sword with his mother and disappearing to try and gather his thoughts - though they slipped through his fingers like sand. He was a monster. He had to be. He certainly wasn't a human anymore. Yet he was still morally opposed to Genesis' tirade on Shinra. He still cared for Zack. Not like a monster would at all. When Zack eventually came to Banora looking for the Firsts in Sephiroth's stead, Angeal would protect him from Genesis, almost able to pick a side—but when he returned to his childhood home, he found his mother dead. Gillian was unable to live with the guilt of the things she had created, and Angeal was unable to live with what he was.Things only went further downhill when a pair of white wings emerged from his right shoulder-blade — an agonising forty-eight hours, in which something squirmed and writhed under his skin, threatening to erupt any moment but never quite making it. (A younger Angeal would have been patient enough to wait out the pain. The "monster" could take no more, cutting it free with a knife in front of a mirror.)Still, as much as he tried to live up to his self-image, to make himself as evil as he felt he should be, to fit the mold as easily as Genesis did — Angeal had to admit defeat. He could not return to Shinra, not now that he knew the truth - but he couldn't wage war on the people he loved either. Innocent people could not be allowed to suffer just because he was.Gathering his affairs, Angeal created a Canine Monster copy, and left it in Aerith's church as a protector. He then led Zack to Modeoheim, allowing the boy to fight—and as far as he was aware, destroy—Genesis, before asking his young protege to end his own suffering, as he did not have the courage to do it himself. Summoning the copies he learned to create, he turned into Angeal Penance, a chimaera-like creature, forcing Zack to kill him. In his final moments, he thanked him, and passed down his most prized possesion: the Buster Sword.

Personality. To the masses, Angeal Hewley is a serious, hard-working man, who lives by a strict moral code, and has very little time for nonsense. Lacking in Genesis' audacious spirit and glamour, and the mysterious allure of Sephiroth's aloof nature, Angeal tends to take a backseat in the public's eyes. Civilians tend to hold him in the same regard you would a teacher, and general consensus is that he has—for lack of a better word—a stick up his ass. Not that he isn't respected; there is nothing more reassuring than the presence of Commander Hewley. He just tends to end up the "kill" in kiss, marry, kill by default.
This isn't too far from the truth — Angeal often acts as the voice of reason, and he commands his troops with a strict (yet compassionate) hand. What the public don't realise is that he is by far the most extroverted of the Firsts. Unlike the others, who can only put on a mask for the public, Angeal genuinely loves people. Would he prefer to not have to perform for the public eye? Of course, but that doesn't mean he's not genuinely comfortable doing so.
The serious front he puts on stems primarily from having to grow up quickly. Genesis would joke that he came out of the womb at forty years old, but in reality, he placed a lot of responsibility on himself at a young age. He has an innate need to solve everyone else's problems, whether they asked him to or not—something he picked up as a child, desperate to fix his family's financial situation.

The stoic nature serves him best on the battlefield. Angeal is a deeply empathetic person with a tendency towards self-flagellation — when he loses one of his soldiers, or one even gets severely injured, he will take it personally. any blood shed is on his hands. all lives lost are sins he must atone for. the only thing stopping him from falling apart is knowing people are counting on his strength.
General headcanons/meta. Outside of work, Angeal enjoys cooking, baking and gardening — hobbies which generally clash with his hypermasculine appearance, and earn him a great deal of teasing from his comrades, though he doesn't let this bother him. Despite his genuine interest and extensive research into horticulture, he struggles to keep plants alive in smoggy Midgar. He enjoys feeding his friends, though they are far pickier than him, which can make it something of a challenge.
Both Genesis and Angeal are fluent in a language they refer to as Banoran.
After his suicide in Modeoheim, Zack dropped his body at Shinra's feet, both out of hope that he'd be put to rest, and the knowledge that something like Angeal was too important to leave to rot. A grave was dug, but no body was ever lowered in. Instead, it found its way into Shinra's research department, where it was torn apart, piece by piece, to make way for a new generation of G-Type SOLDIERs - before being unceremoniously discarded. If you look hard enough, you might still find white feathers in amongst the Mako tanks. They do make such a mess.
